Shinkouhyou is awesome. I like him quite a bit, but not as much as I used to though. When I read through Engi for the first time, Shinkouhyou was my favourite for the first half of the series, by the second half he became overshadowed by beautiful people like Roushi and Hanyoutai!Youzen, hahaha.

Man I love how Fujisaki flipped everything upside down. In most versions of Fengshen, Shinkouhyou is this miserly jerk who always makes trouble for Taikoubou. In Fujisaki’s version, he’s this chill clown who does essentially nothing until something went against his principles. The most powerful doushi, with the most powerful weapon and the most powerful mount…what does he do? Watches everything unfold as if it were a Netflix show.

I love his interactions with Bouchan. He’s kind of a lonely guy so he uses his superiority and information to draw some attention to himself but Bouchan always sees right through this. I think they would get along more if the both of them dropped their pretentious attitudes toward each other…but that would be no fun, ehehe.

Shinkouhyou is a lurker and borderline creeper with some really interesting aesthetics and ethics. He takes after Roushi in many ways…such as the really long pants (he gets longer pants in the second half) and the non-intervention attitude. Shinkouhyou and Roushi are two characters in Engi who really live the way of the Tao.

I'm gonna be that weirdo that chooses a really obscure character. Ryuukan. There, have fun.

LMAO. They bloody appear for like…maybe no more than six panels. Ryuukan is that sourly-looking honourary brother of Hiko that looks like a cross between Chuuou and a clown. He looks like the stoic silent type imo. I have more feelings towards Shuu Ki because he’s an ikemen ~~who kind of looks like Youzen~~.

Do you think you would love Youzen as much, if Bou was a different kind of character? Or what if Bou wasn't the protagonist, but Youzen was?

I’m not sure, it depends but I don’t think I would love Youzen as much as I currently do if Bou was not the way he is now. Whatever Youzen isn’t, Taikoubou is, and so they really complement each other. Part of Youzen’s pitiful charm appeal to me is particularly because Bou is the stronger of the two. He raises Youzen up emotionally while keeping himself afloat on his own. Bou isn’t as emotionally reliant on Youzen as he is physically but the physical element is more easily substituted. Not to say Youzen isn’t needed but when the person you look towards doesn’t necessarily need you, that makes it all the more bitter. Like unrequited love but not quite :P… If Bou were less capable, I’d have less attachment towards Youzen. If that were the case, Youzen would be taking care of someone who deeply needed his help, but the case in reality is, Youzen is trying to take care of someone who is already capable enough and the thought of that alone gives me the butterflies (this is putting aside some personal development they go through together later on of course~).

If Youzen was the protagonist I think the story would’ve ended in one volume.

Obviously because I talk about him so much I’m like a broken record asdfgsjaga. No one wants to hear me talk about the same guy over and over (but I’m gonna do it anyway!). Oddly enough, Bouchan is my favourite everything for just his sheer awesomeness but Youzen is my favourite in Engi. I know that’s contradictory but that’s really how it is, since honestly speaking, he’s not the greatest character I’ve ever encountered…but I do have the most sentimental attachment to him. My strange attachment to Youzen is strongly personal and emotional, and /because/ of Taikoubou. Youzen to me.…is like the most pitiful puppy in the world (and I happen to have a thing for useless men XP). He’s basically one of the most rigged characters on Bou’s side. Good-looking, reputable, loyal and is capable of absolutely anything. He’s second to none in almost everything but he’s still just the right hand man (what a Lancer, jeez!). He is thee most obliviously whipped foil character I’ve ever seen. He does everything for Bou unconditionally and without much complaint. He even does things for him without being directly ordered to. Before meeting Bou, he was very confident and self-manageable but after meeting Bou he practically becomes emotionally dependant on him to the point where he contradicts himself left and right. The fact that he doesn’t realize much of this himself is what makes him super, duper cute. He’s a closet Bou fanboy and he doesn’t even know it. “Suusu, suusu, is suusu is okay, is suusu alive, suusu is the best, suusu, suusu!” ////////// asfdhdhsjk. I enjoy Youzen as a very well developed character but I love him because he is such a willing sidekick. I’ve never met anyone so unwittedly devoted to another like this. The stronger Youzen gets, the cuter I think he is because no matter how powerful he becomes he’s still just number two.

You know what I would ask. Bunchuu.

The most stubborn mule in the world. He’s like a cranky old man who is so set in his ways he won’t listen to a darn thing anyone else says. It’s his way or the highway. Surprisingly, that coupled with the fact that he’s secretly a romantic sap makes him kind of adorable; afterall, he did stubbornly uphold a whole dynasty for eons, all because of one simple promise he made to a woman in his past (whom he probably held unrequitted affections for). This promise he tried so hard to keep, not only turned him into the most powerful human, but also enabled him to (pretty much) single-handedly overturn the heavens. No one and nothing had the power to stop him…or at least, nothing but the words of his best friend turned bitter enemy. Even as enemies you could tell Bunchuu had no one else in the world he trusted more. All it took were some manly exchanges of fists and mere words to snap him out of his narrow mind-set. It’s almost…Hollywood. That aside, Bunchuu is rather intelligent and also…not righteous persay but very chivalrious. His personality makes him hard to handle but he’s really just a big softie. You know, as the sayin goes: the more powerful a man, the more awkward he is.

Chou Koumei

A hedonist to the extreme!! Powerful, excessively lavish, gaudy, vain and battle-thirsty—-sounds like all terrible traits but he’s so honest and fun you can’t help but laugh or like him. Chou Koumei is very much the W-T-F factor in Engi. He has the appearance of a gentleman but there’s nothing chivalrious about him. Chou Koumei hates to lose above all else and is always willing to dirty his hands or do whatever it takes to get what he wants. Chivarly is nothing before victory. His eccentricity and persistence makes it difficult to predict his actions. His confidence and narcissim are his good-points, believe it or not, and the guy is always in a world of his own, but somehow that’s really easy to swallow.

Taiitsu!

Haha, the nutty scientist. Taiitsu is really fun. He’s a perfetionist in some ways, can be a little vain, and a bit of a coward, but overall is a good person at heart. He’s got a thing for technology and the sight of something technologically advanced makes him dance inside. He’s not stingy but he’s hard on his pupil Nataku and won’t willingly let Nataku get what he wants (though he’s quick to cave in). He’s a doting parent so he always wants what’s best for the guy, even at the cost of his safety sometimes. Taiitsu is also very competitive with Unchuushi and Dotoku-shinjin, who are collectively known as the three freaks. He’s not much of a fighter so he helps out Konron in the sidelines. Again, he’s a technophilia and would risk his life for technological advancement. Taiitsu tries his best to be on-screen as much as possible and although he’s rarely seen, it’s easy to appreciate his comical appeal, his usefulness and his true character when he does.

Nataku

Nataku is surprisingly not as simple as he appears, but also very much so. He’s like a child or a robot most of the time in that he reacts to things without much thought or he observes things rather straight-forwardly, but that doesn’t mean he’s emotionally stunted. Sometimes Nataku displays great empathy or understanding for others. As we all know he’s a giant mother-con but he also seems to have a weakness for those who appear pure-hearted. Nataku is strangely a good judge of character. He’ll probably never admit it but he’s rather fond of Taiitsu as well. In the anime Nataku is seen to be good friends with Raishinshi but in the manga he actually is more aquainted with Youzen. They are often seen as power-rivals in the manga but the two actually get aong fairly well. Once, he even displayed concern for Youzen. I’d dare say, after Taikoubou, Youzen is most comfortable being around Nataku. Well, anyway, Nataku’s hot-headedness has always been a charm point for some.

Personally I never really became attached to Tenka. He could’ve had a little more development imo, but Tenka is very popular nonetheless. He’s a lot like his teacher. Very enthusiastic about training and battle. He’s stubborn and hates to lose. He would put his life on the line just to win. He’s very proud of his father and just a tad self-centered (a little). He can sometimes put his own goals above others or can be insensitive to others’ cirumtances. Tenka is prideful and uninhibited. He lives his life the way he truly wants to without holding back (not in a hedonistic manner) and that in a way, is admirable.

Leave an Engi character in my Ask Box and I'll tell you how I feel about them.

Well, no one forgot…she went down in history is as the cruellest vixen ever, though it had to happen. She was a demon, she enjoyed it, and it wasn’t until the very end that we learned she wanted to transcend all of that.

No one forgave her but there wasn’t much anyone could do, when it’s over, it’s over. The first jump ~~heroine~~ villain to pull a complete karma hudini, and somehow, that’s so incredibly badass.
